Gail C Copeland: Welcome to the Lord’s table. I hope you’re hungry Come on let’s go eat!
Bishop Noel Jones: Ephesians, we’re in Ephesians if you remember and, how could you forget? And and of course the contrast was extreme, I mean this was extreme.
Verse 20 “But ye have not so learned Christ; 21 If so be that ye have heard him,” 21 “been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus: 22 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; 23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; 24 that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.
” Then he says, “25 Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another.
26 Be ye angry, and sin not:” O he’s talking to folk come out of Compton [chuckles] Watts and stuff “Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: 27 Neither give place to the devil.
28 Let him that stole steal no more: but” get a job [applause] “but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have” No notice now I’m just now getting a job and the first thing he says, “that he may have to give to him that needeth.
29 Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.
” I think we’ll get that far, maybe we won’t, we’ll see Now notice how, how he begins now to contrast the old man and the new man and the putting off and the putting on and he’s suggesting very clearly that nobody operates in a vacuum we’re not operating in a place where nothing is happening its either you’re doing something positive or you’re doing something negative, but you are doing something And that’s very interesting because the world is a place where you’re forced to make decisions about your behavior the world forces us, just life itself forces us to make decisions that relate to behavior.
And he is suggesting from the old man, new man contrast, the counterdistinction between the two and having them and having them in one body, the old man, new man.
I think I could ask you know somebody is it your old man working today or is it your new man? [chuckle] You know I just thought about that [chuckles] I need to People talk to you say now, “Which one, which man is at working in you?” So immediately he’s suggesting there is some bipolar between the new man and the old man in each one of us [yes] and there are certain triggers obviously that move us from one to the other and it is interesting when you have allowed, when we have allowed satan to control our buttons [amen] Yeah they shouting, they running, they jumping [clapping] they you know they screaming and they falling out in church, but I know where the buttons are [well] You know my ex-wife and I it was a terrible thing when we’d sit around the table and she would say something and you know the saints are sitting around and she’d say something and I’d go off and they wouldn’t the saints were looking at me like, “What’s wrong with the pastor?” [chuckles] Because they couldn’t see or they didn’t know they weren’t on the same frequency they weren’t on the same, in the same realm, they weren’t You know if you, if you, if you don’t want the police to know what you’re saying, you change frequencies You just, if you’re on the cb when we used to have cbs running around at inordinate speeds and we’d “Breaker 1-9 go to channel 16” So we’d get off the regular channel because the frequency was open to everybody So the policeman sitting down on the highway and here you talking “Is the Smokie over your donkey?” You know [chuckles] all that kind of crazy talk And they coming down the road at 130 miles an hour want to find out where the man is and he’s down there listening and he’s waiting for you, so you switch frequencies, so he can’t hear you See when you’re close to somebody they’re on your frequency [amen] and all they have to do is say something that nobody else understands [well] but it pushes your button and all of a sudden you explode and everybody is looking at you like you’re a madman because they didn’t know what just transpired See its a terrible thing when satan has our buttons so no matter how deeply we get in the things of God by the time we walk out in the parking lot and somebody gets close to our car with their car and next thing a button is pushed and question is now which man are you now? Is this the new man that’s about to curse somebody out or is this the old man that just showed up again? And as, it seems it seems a little comical, but its real and sometimes I’ve had to laugh to keep from crying and to find something funny in something that was really very serious just to maintain my sanity because there is not a big gap between shifting from the old man to the new man, in fact it seems a harder gap shifting from the old man to the new man than it is going backsliding because many times we have things under wrap, but we haven’t been renewed ahh Am I, am I, you know ’cause renewal suggests that certain things will not pop-up because I’m not the same person [right] Its a difference between being changed and trying to keep something down [that’s right] O its a difference, its a difference between it not being in your heart anymore than it being in your heart and you’re trying to control it So now this raises some issues, it raises some questions, and the question it raise is will anyone of us ever be in a place where we will not have to battle? I need to talk to some real people tonight, I was working all night didn’t sleep so I’m a little slow in my head, been working all night on this message and I got caught up in it next thing I know it was 6 o’clock in the morning, but give some consideration to will I always be in this battle? This is why I hear Paul saying “For me to die is gain” because somehow in death and if I die in the Lord, then I no longer have to battle [amen] ‘Cause I couldn’t quite understand why dying would be gain If to live is Christ and then, dying is gain.
See to live and make your life Christ, then that means you have to sacrifice yourself because he’s crying out, “Let this mind be in you that was also in Christ Jesus” Well Lord, what am I going to do with my mind? [chuckles, clapping] See this becomes the issue here and that is, what am I going to do with my mind, when I can’t take it out of my head and still live you? I’m living your life, but I still have my mind So it suggests to me that there’s never a time when there is going to be a transplant and if there’s not going to be a transplant, then I’m going to have to battle Which means what I feed is going to have the upper hand [yes] ahh You can’t feed yourself pornography if you’re trying to get over it [right, amen] Ain’t no sense, you know we all grown, are you all grown? [chuckles] Amen, you can’t feed yourself the thing you’re trying to get over because if you’re feeding the flesh, then the old man is going to dominate because the new man needs some fuel too, and the fuel the new man needs is the word of God, its worship its praise, its proximity to the things of God and you have to give God equal time, if you’re going to overcome the enemy or else if you feed whatever you feed that’s what is going to be dominate because its going to be fueled and you can’t feed something that you’re trying to get over or its going to dominate you and keep you in check.
God never intended for the world to control us, he intended for us to control the world but once our spirit died and we became outsiders then now he’s telling us be not conformed to the world, but be transformed by the renewing of the mind and the whole renewal is a process, which means I have to get to the place where I bring it under subjection and then I have to bring it under subjection and then keep it under subjection because he’s always being fed subconciously [applause] ahh Let me talk to you about that [amen] Have you ever just, and even as a preacher I make sure that I don’t begin to adopt habits in preaching that have no theological base Because many times you sit in a service and preacher say something and he’s getting over and it sound real good to you, and you just adopt it and then when you study it close enough you find it has no theological substantive value there’s no, its nothing to it.
The devil the devil should have killed me when he had me, but I got away O everybody start screaming and shouting, start running and, but then it has no real theological base because if I were chosen in him before the foundation of the world, then the devil never really had me [applause] I lived like he had me, I behaved like he had me we interacted like he had me, but if I were chosen in him before I got here, then he never really had me because I was already chosen in the Lord before the foundation of the world.
So even though it sounds good, it has no thelogical leg to stand on.
I mean we can adopt it, you can use it, people running around calling themselves apostles today.
I have no problem with it because I understand it.
You just adopted the name in hierarchy, but as far as apostles in the scriptures concerned they all had to have been with Jesus and Paul is the only exception and he was with him for three years in Galatia.
So the truth is he has to be selected by the Lord.
Now I understand it, so if you call yourself apostle, I will certainly call you apostle [chuckles] but I understand the scriptural ramifications for being an apostle, and I understand what ratifies apostleship and so I don’t have a problem calling you an apostle because you just simply took a title and pinned it to your name and I will gladly do it, but I understand the bottom line you see Its critical then for all of us to navigate through here and understand that you can adapt some things without giving any consciousness to what you just took on [yes, amen] O yeah, its just subconsciously subconsciously.
You’re sitting there watching the football game and they keep running the Budweiser Beer commercial [chuckles] and subconsciously it spoke to your need [chuckles] for a beer.
Subconsciously you’re watching the tv and they start running hamburgers across, and all of a sudden you feel like you need a Whopper [chuckles] Subconsciously, you weren’t giving any real focus to it and you can’t live in this world and it not rub off on you without you giving much, you don’t have to give much focus to it And so the old man is being fed even when you’re not conscious [amen] ahh I wish you’d understand what I’m saying, but to get close to God its an activity you have to be conscious about [alright, alright] You don’t get close to God by mistake [right] you get close to God by intense desire to please him [yes, yes, alright] it just doesn’t happen by happenstance, you have to go after him seek him.
He said seek me while I may be found, call upon me while I am near [yes] Seek ye first the kingdom of heaven, I mean to get up and come out here just to sit in a bible class for an hour or so you had to make up your mind to do that and you had to overcome the urge to sit and watch Power or Empire [laughing, amen, alright] Man, I hope I go over there and the Bishop say something that makes some sense ’cause all I’m giving up to get over there tonight, I hope he I hope he’s in the word tonight [amen] I hope he’s anointed tonight ’cause I’m sure giving up a whole lot to go over there to hear him, I could be right here sitting here watching Tyler Perry, watching that madness.
Everybody’s dead, they just started killing everybody [laughing] (hahaha) You got to understand that everything feeds us [thank you] everything feeds and tends to endorse our weaknesses The world feeds the flesh and to be in the world and not of the world, is not easy [amen] [amen] it takes commitment [amen] it takes a drive to be close to God [applause] it takes an awakening, it takes a renewal, it takes everything that God has to throw at you and me for us to move within the parameters of what it is that he wants us to move in because its so easy for us to throw our hands up and just keep living the way we want to live.
O its easy to keep talking about people negatively; O its easy to start putting people down; its easy to be lazy its easy to wait for somebody else to take care of you life; its easy to look for somebody else to give you happiness; its easy to be angry.
Some people just live angry; some people just live bitter; some people can’t get over anything can’t forget anything, can’t forgive anything always going back into something they should have got out of always bringing up something, you go to bed and you say, well why you feeling like this? Did it happen yesterday? No 15 years ago [applause, laughing] O I tell you all the time and I’ll tell you again tonight [ooo.
] I can put something on layaway [well] for a whole year, you decided you want half a carat diamond earring, and I couldn’t afford it, so I put it on layaway Take my little pennies and, and add up my little pennies and put the thing on layaway, hope they won’t sell it Miss my layaway payment, run down there real quick to see do they still have it [laughing] just working hard, diligently, get me an extra job put the thing on layaway, took me a whole year and a half to get it out Bring it to you, you smile, got happy, laughed and and five minutes later, it was over [laughing] Done worked a year and a half, had the thing on layaway, trying to please you and five minutes later (smooch) O you so sweet, I love you, O you the best in the world, and five minutes later it was over.
Riding down in the car and we having a little spat, and I open my mouth and say something I didn’t think about [chuckles] Said something I shouldn’t have said, granted but I said it, and immediately I wish I could take it back but a spoken word can’t come back sped arrow can’t come back, once you shoot that bullet, it ain’t coming back [that’s right] somethings just not going to come back.
So I said something, I said something about your nose or your breath [chuckles] and I said something real quick [chuckles] wish I didn’t say it but I said it.
Now it took me a year and a half to get you that half carat diamond and you forgot that in five minutes [chuckles] I said something I shouldn’t have said that it didn’t take me a year and a half to think about, I said it just out of my mouth impulsively wish I could get it back and 15 years, you still bringing that up [laughing, clapping] Give some consideration to how easy it is for us to hold onto things we should let go, and how hard it is to let go of things we should hold onto Talk to me somebody [yes] because we’re still sitting here with resentments over some people [alright] that we haven’t been around in 10 years [uh-uh] like its yesterday The old man, the world feeds it [yes] The shows we watch for entertainment, natural feed natural feed, just natural, I’m watching for entertainment You get up, you know you’re in trouble when you get up 50-years-old and go in a room with a 5-year-old ’cause you scared, done watch them ole, crazy, horror movies, now you scared, checking every lock on the door, checking to make sure everything is locked out now you done scared yourself to death watching Freddy Krueger [laughing] Talk to me now, watching Saw 3 and Saw 4 and Saw 5 [chuckles] all the madness and now natural feed natural.
The world is designed to feed your flesh To be in the world and not of the world is not easy.
Hats off to everyone who has had a victory today [amen, applause] Give God praise [applause] for everyone who kept their mouth in a situation where you could have gone on [applause] hats off to you [applause] bless you, God be with you.
Hats off to everybody who gave to somebody something they could have kept [applause] for themselves [applause] bless you because its not the way of the world, you don’t pick up strangers [amen] Hear me when I tell you ’cause that’s not the way of the world You don’t let certain people in your home because that’s not the way of the world, its dangerous People will kill you rather than help you [clapping] Amen, stop by to pick up somebody and its a setup [right] somebody the tire isn’t really flat, they just have it jacked up waiting for somebody to stop, so you’re skeptical I was telling someone the other day, nobody should live their life and not have hope nobody should live their life and not be kind; nobody should live their life and live it in skepticism and cynical and scared of people; nobody should live their life and have to be withdrawn [amen] have to be in a corner have to hide out because people are envious nobody should live their life and can’t express their happiness and their joy because people are sick when you walk around and it seems like you don’t have a care in the world, when you don’t show it [alright, tell it, amen] Shouldn’t have to live your life where you can’t even talk to the people who are close to you for fear of what they will say when you turn your back; shouldn’t have to live your life when you can’t say to somebody, “I’m sorry,” and they just accept it and receive it without treating you as if you’re stupid or a fool you shouldn’t live your life like that, but that’s what the world has forced us to do to live secluded, to live questioning, to live cynically to live without love, to live without care to live narcissistically, to live protecting defending, dodging and hiding that’s how the world [clapping, hallelujah] has forced us to live [that’s right] Where your enemy can be your best friend [well, my my my] ahh I wish I could talk to you about it I saw something that, that the bible is a remarkable book.
I saw something that just taught me that, I know its good to testify about your blessings but its good to testify about your blessings to bless people [right, right] Sometimes you got to shut your mouth around cursed people.
I was in Africa the other day and I met he’s head of the you know one of those big companies France Bellary is the name of the company and he’s the African head He said something to me it was interesing, he said “Bishop, money doesn’t like noise” He said money don’t like noise and and of course, you know you’re looking for an explanation and that is that when you really have money you’re not trying to show it [right] you’re not trying to show it.
I know some billionaire fellows that will walk in here and sit down in this place and you’ll never know it they’re rich, but they’re not famous and I said all that because I was reading the other day a scripture that really just slapped me in my face and that was when Hezekiah showed all of the riches in the temple [yes] He took the king Nebuchadnezzar or one of the kings from the east, he took him on a tour could be Tiglath-Pileser, one of them, can’t remember exactly took him on a tour [yes] Now when you take somebody in your treasure house [alright now] they got to be close to you at the time or you think they are [yes, come on, haha] took them in and showed them everything that he had [yes] and they just came back and got it [chuckles, showed them where it was] To let somebody that close to you [well] you have to see them as a friend [yes, tell it] but don’t fool yourself The way of the world is that some people just can’t handle you being blessed [applause, true] and I guarantee you whoever can’t handle you being blessed never prayed for you to be blessed [yes] because whoever prays for you to be blessed, enjoys it when God blesses you O yes, whenever you get out of living with everybody else and can live on your own, somebody’s angry about that, somebody would rather you just keep begging and begging and begging and not ever get to the place where you can stand up on your own two feet, particularly if they are still begging and begging and begging and begging and begging.
People aren’t happy for you when you leave them in a place [clapping] that you used to be in [well, tell it] Sometimes your own family members [right, my God] will blame you for your success [yes] We had the same mama [chuckle] we had the same papa, we grew up in the same house you didn’t choose to exert any effort [clapping] Now I’m to blame because you didn’t exert any effort The world is an envious place; its a place where people will hurt you over your success; its a place where people would rather control you than to let you become who God has ordained for you to be and its easy to fall into that kind of spirit [yes, yes] To be glad for somebody [yes] even though you don’t have what they have, just to be glad for them.
See which which, which is it, that’s functioning? Which is it, that’s why I understand now why the Holy Spirit, one of the fruit of the spirit is self-control [ahh] temperance.
There has to be an element of self-control [amen] Yes I can say it, but what good is it going to do? Why would I say something that’s going to stir up trouble? [clapping] Why should I take something negative to somebody, know its going to hurt their feelings [clapping] when its not necessary? [right] I learned a lot of things in, you know in, and you got to learn these things.
I’m running, when I was running I would run seven or eight miles in Texas and I’m talking now, and I’d try to run late at night I’d go out there with Mike Moss at 12 o’clock at night, 12 midnight, here we are and we’re not on a track Track you going around, you coming around.
When you’re running down in Texas 12 o’clock at night with a partner, you going out two and a half miles, you coming back two and a half miles and the last thing you want to hear is “Yahoo!” [laughing] Crazy pick up trucks coming by with a whole lot drunk white boys talking ’bout, “Wahoo!” Boy you talk about some running in the night then doc [laughing] (haha) Don’t leave me, don’t leave me! [laughing] And, and so I’d, so okay so you do seven, eight, nine miles and I’m sitting and a fella comes by and he said, “Man you know I did four miles today I did four miles” And the first thing come out of my mouth, “O yeah that’s good but I did eight miles” [chuckles] And then I learned as I thought about it, was that really necessary? [alright now] He is extolling the virtues of what he has achieved [right] and he is glad about his achievement, why do you have to shut his mouth [yes] with what you’re doing It doesn’t add to you [alright] it doesn’t give you anymore miles [alright] What you just did is, you just burst his bubble made him feel less than he should feel, after he had made an achievement So after I thought about it I said to myself, “Never again” I could have ran from here to the North Pole and back, he could have run across the street, if he says, “Man I ran across the street” Glory be to God! Thank you Jesus! [applause] I’m glad you did! [applause] Because somethings just don’t need to be said, if its not going to be helpful to the people around you, but that’s the way of the world [amen] And that’s what the old man is tapped into braggadocious [yes] boastful [uh-uh] proud [yes] lovers of themselves more than lovers of God, covetous That’s a serious word right there and envious envious.
Somebody sent me something the other day said people talk about you negatively, that’s how they feel they don’t care about you, but they talk about you negatively to other people until they can convince somebody else [yes] to be negative towards you [clapping, that’s right] You see what I’m saying? That’s the way of the world, that’s the way of the old man that’s what he’s attached to, that’s what comes natural You don’t have to fight to be evil, you have to fight to be good [yes] mm-mh [right] you don’t have to fight to curse [right] I mean some people curse, I mean its like poetry [laughing] [laughing, yes] (haha) O yeah, you just got to know, you got to know to flow it [laughing] it takes a lot of practice, its like rapping [laughing] just got to know how to make it flow [laughing] Lord don’t get you angry enough Man, he said Man he’s extremely articulate [laughing] (haha) So here it is now, he now gives us little tidbits.
Here’s a little tidbits “25.
Putting away lying,” [right, yes] Now there are all kinds of lies all kinds of lies and the justification is in many instances, I lied because I knew what it would cause if I told the truth Have you ever avoided the truth to keep somebody out of jail? Yourself [laughing, amen] (hahaha) [laughing] (hahaha) You ever lied to keep somebody out of trouble? Yourself [yes, chuckles] Sometimes you try to lie around a punishment You know there are somethings that you have to consider when you start dealing with human relationships.
Why do I have to lie to you? [that’s right] You know when I was raising, when my kids were with me I made sure that I had the kind of disposition that they could say anything to me that they could open up and say anything to me because I realize that when the communication stops, my control ends [amen, amen, clapping] And I’d rather hold my peace and be cool about what I’m hearing than to act surprise or act crazy because I’ll tell you this if I start talking to you about something personal and your eyes get wide [laughing] and you say something to me like, “You?” [laughing] Zip, I’m a shut it up right there because you can’t handle it [that’s right, clapping, amen] If I’m talking to you I can say “You mean, you?” [chuckles] Can’t handle it [alright] can’t handle it ’cause I am not surprised at what people do [right, clapping] You can’t surprise me about your behavior You could have your dress, you could have your dress so long, its a train [laughing] You could look as holy as holy looks [laughing] you could walk in here with a turban [laughing] have a big staff [chuckles] call yourself modern day Moses [laughing, clapping] when you begin to talk to me, I just look at you like you were a human being and I’m not surprised [chuckles] And the second thing is, I don’t lose respect for people over what they do [right] I don’t see you in different light because of any of your behavior Maybe that’s a God-given trait because of the job I’m in but I don’t reduce your value because of your behavior because I’m not surprised at what human beings do, no surprise I’m not surprised as to where you’re coming from [well] I’m not surprised about what your past is comprised of I’m not surprised.
I done read enough of that bible to understand human behavior can [clapping] go from one extreme to another and go beyond what is even normal So why should I lie to you? Why should I be put in a position where I have to lie? Why? And why should I assume you can’t handle the truth? When as I said before, you probably can handle the truth better than I can lie [amen] ahh Its an interesting dynamic He’s saying, “Don’t lie to each other” [right] and the reason he says don’t lie to each other is because we’re one body [amen, clap] I’m lying because I don’t think you’ll forgive if you know the truth I’m lying, I told I think it was 25,000 women Essence the man is lying he still want to stay [haha] if he lying to you, he did it and you know here’s what you gone tell him, “Well you know just come on tell the truth ’cause I already know” [chuckles] Well if you already know why do I need to say anything [laughing] since you already know I know, I know what you been doing, I already know so just come tell me, just tell me the truth tell me the truth.
Since you already know, why do I have to say anything? See relationships a whole lot of games go on in a little relationship [right] whole lot of game Now why should I have to lie? I’m lying to protect you No, I’m lying on a defensive piece [yes] I’m lying to protect my position [right] I’m lying ’cause I want to do what I want to do, but I want you to stay where you are uh-uh See, but maybe I should just tell you the truth and give you the choice [right, right, yes] I tell you the truth, you got a choice [right, well] to stay or leave [right] but now the question is are you going to think when I tell you the truth that I don’t care, if you leave [chuckles, clapping] See the complexity of the world has taken away the simplicity of God’s truth [well] You see for God to be the same yesterday, today and forever he’s got to be very simple [right] for you and I who are going through changes, we are very complex I have news for you, we are more complicated than God He’s the same yesterday, today and forever, ain’t no complication in that, but when you wake up I got to ask you, “Who are you today?” [laughing, clapping] Because you’re not always the same person How many of you are in there? [chuckles] O you were, how many demons did the man have? He said, “My name is Legion [yes] for we are many” This is one man talking [right] Legion, 6000 in a legion, isn’t it 6,000? [yes] Say my name is Legion for we are many The Lord cast the devils out of him the whole swine herd ran down into the water and drowned all of the swine, all the swine from the people in Gadarenes they lost all their pigs [right, laughing] one man had enough demons to kill a whole herd of pigs [yes, chuckles] Amen, complicated the Holy Spirit takes us into simplicity because its only in simplicity that you have peace [that’s right] Isn’t it one of the fruit of the spirit is peace? [applause] Peace is the fruit of the spirit tranquility, serenity and that is what God is leading us into God is, if you follow God you will get off them pills [right, amen] I wish some body talk to me.
You got pills to go to sleep, pills to get up pills to keep you during the day and when you can’t get a pill you, “Man I need a drink, I got to get something” [laughing] Man And all of it is mind-altering.
Notice how satan plays You snorting cocaine, mind-altering; you hitting marijuana hard, mind-altering; drinking, mind-altering; pills, mind-altering because that’s how the world works.
Be not conformed be transformed; renewing of the mind, it ain’t that easy You have to be committed, you have to believe in the process, you have to have faith, you have to have expectation [applause] you got to lose friends you got to lose running buddies [applause] you got to lose girlfriends, you got to lose boyfriends [applause] you got to lose people who you hanging out with, you its a sacrifice to live [right, amen] to do the right thing, it shouldn’t be a sacrifice, it should be natural but the world thinks we’re unnatural [right] because the thing has been turned around.
“Where you going tonight?” Church “On a Friday night?” “You not hanging out tonight?” No, I got to go to church in the morning “But its Saturday night.
People don’t get ready for church on Saturday nights” People get ready for hangovers [laughing] I wanna talk See you lying to one another, he says you don’t lie to one another He says, every man speak the truth not to his neighbor, but with his neighbor because truth should be reciprocal I can’t be telling you the truth and you’re not telling me the truth And again every time we meet its a power move, its people wanting power over the other person Now here’s what he says, The unity in Christ should force us to speak the truth [yes] because we are members one of another So lying to you is like lying to myself when we are members one of another.
When two people become one in marriage when you start lying to each other you completely distort the unity that should exist because you can’t have unity in lies because a lie is nothing [amen] You just told me a bunch of nothing, I can’t stake my life on a nothing I need to have something tangible to walk across this bridge You can’t tell me a lie and expect me to make a good decision on a lie.
I need facts to make decisions, not lies And I should be free, you should give me freedom and love me enough to tell me the truth so that I can decide whether I want to do this or not You understand what I’m saying? I don’t want to be in a business where somebody is building something for me or somebody is working on a project for me and they don’t give me the price upfront.
So they working through the thing and they tell you, no its reasonable, I’ll get you at the end and then they work through the thing and then they come with a ridiculous price, now we gone fallout.
Now the best thing to do is tell me upfront.
Give me the opportunity to make the decision whether I want to do this or not.
If its 7,000 dollars, tell me Don’t tell me, “O its going to be reasonable” and then at the end of the deal you bring me some ridiculous figure that I had no thought about because you suckered me in by being kind upfront but you knew you had a weapon to bring at the end of the day Give me the truth upfront, tell me you ain’t no good [that’s right] [applause] and let me decide whether I want to be with you, tell me you’re envious and like to talk about people and like to put people down because here’s what is going to happen After you put everybody down and I’m the only one left [chuckles, that’s right] O I’ve learned that lesson the hard way.
You sit around with people whose you know just cheating everybody, cheating everybody why you think they won’t cheat you? After they have cheated everybody and everybody has left then the only person for them to take it out on, is you And then they have the nerve to tell you, “You knew I was a snake when you met me” [applause] Talk to me children of God.
And then you have to understand many times we don’t have the ability to handle the truth because of something that’s subjectively lacking in ourselves You don’t want the truth ’cause when you get the truth, you got to make a decision [amen, amen] Ooo.
Talk to me now.
You keep on probing [amen] keep on searching [Jesus] keep on breaking into emails and keep on [chuckles, laughter] Keep on, you gone run up on the truth [right] now you got to make a decision And if you’re not ready to do something with the truth, that’s why you avoid it [right, yes] You don’t keep lying to one another, why you got to tell somebody you bought six suits when you only bought one? [laughing] Why? Amen, you know you rented that car to come to the family reunion [laughing] we saw the Nevada plate on that car and know you live in Colorado We know it was a rent-a-car, you didn’t have to ride up here and try to give the impression this is your car, its a rent-a-car You left the Avis key in the room [laughing, well] But that’s the world, it has to impress it has to give some significance because of things that’s the world, its a place of lies [yes] You’re not that tall [chuckles] get out of them shoes [laughing] [laughing] (hahaha).
All them pumps you wearing [alright now] I told you when the woman went in the bathroom and came out of the bathroom on the man’s honeymoon night and when she walked back out the bathroom he said, “O we being robbed” [laughing, clapping] Come out talking about “Honey” He said, “We being robbed, O my God! Somebody done got in here” [chuckles] We lie all kind of ways, we lie just [chuckles] Lord help us! Its incredible Now here’s one now, ’cause now he’s coming at us and and notice he’s picking the things, he’s picking out the things that we’re most guilty of lying [yes] lying to impress lying to cover what we have done lying on people [yes] lying about people we don’t even know just, just lies, lies, lies.
Deception that’s the game of the world, deception Keeping you off balance, just when you think the thing has settled, here comes another move to keep you off balance [well] find yourself going through changes Then the next thing he comes with is something that comes straight out of our emotion and that is anger.
Now there are three words I noted three words for anger: one is thumos in the Greek and this is a turbulent commotion boiling agitation feelings, passion, anger boiling up and then soon it subsides after you done halfway killed everything in the room I’m not going to be mad tonight I’m not gone say a thing.
He said he was coming home at nine, its now twelve o’clock, but I ain’t gone say nothing tonight, not gone say a word [chuckles] I’m not gone say a word, but be real quiet tonight [chuckles] Then you start singing your hymns [chuckles] the spiritual songs [laughing] I ain’t gone say nothing, I ain’t gone nothing tonight, gone say nothing [chuckles] I ain’t gone say nothing and hitting the table all at the same time [laughing] I ain’t gone say nothing Don’t say nothing [chuckles] It would have been fine had he just come in and was cool and didn’t say, if he had come in and didn’t say a word and just you know, “Hello Babe” and go to the bathroom, take him a shower and go to bed, it would have been fine But when he walks in and looks at you, “What you waiting up for?” [laughing] (hits the podium) [laughing] And all of a sudden you just blacked out [laughing] Thumos that’s the word, thumos You just blacked out don’t know what you said [laughing] don’t know what you did When you came to yourself, the shoe was in your hand [laughing] [chuckles] Thumos, that’s that word, boiling agitation rises up, then goes away quickly or you’d have a heart attack So angry you almost bust, head start hurting immediately fists balled up feel it rising that’s thumos, its the kind of anger that we never want God to have [amen, clapping] Hear me, you don’t want God to have thumos [well] Can you imagine God throwing a temper tantrum? It would blow the world past Jupiter, the world would be on the way past Neptune just slap the back of his hand, thumos Thumos, when you slapped somebody and didn’t even know your hand left your side [laughing, clapping] Threw something at somebody Anger, I mean he’s going down the line where he gets us Come right out of the house of God after a heated service, everybody shouting and running and go right in the parking lot and go thumos on somebody [chuckles] Didn’t even say, you know sometimes at least you catching yourself when you say, “Now if I didn’t have the Holy Ghost” Now you catching yourself, you see what I’m saying? The Lord’s working with you, but when you don’t even go through that [yes] when you just go right there Do you know, do you know that most people who have guns in the house do you know that the people who get shot the most are not intruders? The people right in the house? Yes yes, people lose it lose it and shooting and sitting around sobbing and crying over what they just did ’cause they went thumos just went, its just like and then God help you if you living on the edge angry anyway Where your whole existence is one of anger [well] and bitterness [talk to us] and malicious and sorry for yourself for what you didn’t do with your life and blaming everybody else for what you didn’t do with your life Just thumos, then having been raised in an environment where you’ve seen nothing but violence and you’re living on the edge all the time, you got to get off the edge [amen] you got to get off the edge The lady wanted to drive her down the hillside and so she got in the chariot and one man rode the chariot down and he put the chariot on the edge, brought the chariot back in She didn’t hire him.
Next guy comes along, he rides the chariot, he puts half the wheel over the edge of the precipice puts it back in, she didn’t hire him.
The other guy comes down, he puts the chariot right against the cliff’s wall and allowed him a whole lot of space towards the edge, she hired him Say well he’s not as competent as the others, they can go on the edge.
She said, “No I’d rather have somebody who has a cushion [alright now] somebody who can find themselves before they explode” [clapping] See we live around too many people who are on edge ready to explode and we are too faulty to be with folks who are ready to explode and the people that you are around are too faulty for you to live ready to explode, you have to have some cushion Hear me when I tell you, if you don’t have any cushion, you gone lose your job because somebody is going to get under your skin and you gone cuss your boss out And then when you go home and look at that stack of bills you gone wish you had kept your mouth [that’s right Bishop] O hear me now Bible says a soft answer, turneth away wrath.
O I’m a having the police chief come over here, I’m a have a whole bunch of men over here so we can find out how we can stay alive [alright Bishop] because he’s got the, let me show you something, let me show you something for those of you who like to be angry quickly, ahh, ahh, ahh Go to Romans with me real fast.
What time, we’re almost finished.
Romans, Romans, Romans Romans Chapter 13 Romans Chapter 13 and he says, “1 Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers.
” Now I want to just address that for a minute There is nothing more important in relationships and that is with strangers, with police, with magistrates, with people around you family, there’s nothing more important than being secure, than knowing who you are [amen, amen] There’s nothing more significant than feeling good about yourself [right] without anybody’s applause [amen, clapping] without anybody’s praise without anybody patting you on the back [right] without anybody paying you any attention [right] [applause] It makes for great servanthood it makes for easy reconciliation it makes for wonderful forgiveness it makes for being happy under duress and stress [yes] it makes for being comfortable in situations that are untenable There is nothing more significant than being self-assured self-content and at ease with who you are [amen, applause] You have nothing to prove [applause] you have no body to pull down [applause] you have nobody to slander; you have nobody to push out the way because you are happy [yes] and content with who you are [applause] You don’t want anything someone else has [applause] you don’t have to connive [applause] conspire content [amen] Paul puts it this, he says “Contentment with godliness is great gain” [gain] because at the end, all of that stuff that we’re trying to acquire should be to give us peace.
Well if I can get peace without all of that labor I might as well take it, contentment.
Now its critical now because if I know who I am, I don’t have to go crazy [right] when the higher power comes around [right, applause] I don’t have to prove I’m badder than the police [yes, right, clapping] I don’t have to prove that [right] he can say whatever he want.
I been down in the South in Texas standing six foot four and fellow, “Boy” and the first thing is “How big do men grow where you come from?” [chuckles] You understand what I’m saying? That’s the first reaction, but in all of my blackness, I was richer than most of them [clapping] Why am I arguing? You know I would tell them I say, “Now black as I am and I can buy you and sell you.
” I say, “What if I was white?” [clapping] When you’re content with who you are the color of your skin, you can’t push no button on the color of my skin or the size of my nose (sniff, sniff) [clapping] I love my nose, its my nose, I can’t put no more up it and you think I’m gone put some botox on it, that’s another lie [laughing] I don’t need no botox on it [clapping] Amen, I’m a get old gracefully, I ain’t gone put [amen] no tox.
What does that tox mean? Toxic [chuckles] its a poison, isn’t it? [yes] Amen, just get old, ain’t no harm in being old the alternative is not any, it certainly not better You don’t have to have yourself all distorted, you didn’t like how you looked? [chuckles] Amen, see that’s going to be a problem, when people two percent, two percent of women in the world decide how women ought to look, two percent The two percent you see in the Oprah magazine, the two percent you see in Vogue, Italian Vogue, the two percent you see in the Nieman Marcus commercials, two percent zeros and twos Two percent so we got billion dollars worth of diet diet business is billion dollars worth of it everybody trying to get small like two percent Then when you can’t get the diet right, you just go down and let the man just chop it up, chop it up [laughing] just get the knife in and just peel, go to peeling [chuckles] Can’t get the knife right, stitch it up just stitch it up [chuckles] I got news for you [chuckles] we could take you and take all your flesh off and leave you with bones and you still couldn’t get in a size zero [wow] you weren’t built that way Can somebody talk to me? Why should you spend you life feeling bad about how you look over two percent? [right, applause] And if somebody don’t want you robust or healthy looking, they don’t need to be with you [amen] Amen, don’t come in my life and want to make a two out of me and I’m a 16 [applause] If you want a two, leave me alone [applause] I wish I could talk to people.
You got to feel good about yourself find someway to feel good about yourself, find a way, that’s why we meet God, that’s why we deal with God, that’s why we praise and worship God, that’s why we walk with God to feel good about ourselves; he love me the way I am and he’s changing me into what he wants me to be.
When he died on calvary I was a sinner, I was low down and no good and he died that I might have a right to the tree of life and the reason I feel good about myself is he died to save me [applause] feel good about yourself [applause] Ooo.
I feel like shouting here! So I ain’t got to prove nothing to the police, the higher power He says, “For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.
[amen, thank you] 2 Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance” or the decree “of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.
” [wow, yes] Here’s why, “3 Rulers are not a terror to good works, [alright] but to the evil.
Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power?” Tell you what you do “do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same:” The same that’ll kill you will praise you, if you’re not in that position [right] You got to get yourself out of the position that makes it seems as if you are criminal [well] but then on the other hand, you got to deal with people and pray that God put people in power who do not profile [right] [clapping] See because what gets you really frustrated is when you’re not like that, but you’re treated as if you are [right, clapping] That’s another problem and so you not only have to be in the right place doing good, but you also have to be strong enough to deal with the profilers [amen] mm-mh, “4 For he is the minister of God to thee for good.
[well] But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain:” ahh Study that one, that one needs to be studied [amen] So it don’t make no sense to go thumos on no police [chuckles, amen] I’m in Texas and I’m about to close and we’ll pick up right from here ’cause I got to tell you about parorgizó, which is wrath and then I got to tell you about orge And in the text here he’s using orge.
Got to tell you about that kind of anger ’cause some of us get angry and just black out Amen, it ain’t got nothing to do with age I’m in Texas and I’m leading a preacher, he preached at the church and I’m taking him to show him how to get on 271 coming out of Longview, its a little tricky and I’m trying to show him how to get out.
So he’s in front of me and I’m going to give him the directions ’cause I’m going this way and he’s going to go that way, so I’m going, he’s looking in his rear view mirror, so I slowed down.
Now I’m in a 500 SEL Benz, big ole grey Benz ’cause I used to import grey cars you know and I’m Benz, and all of a sudden boom, somebody hits the back of my car boom and hit it twice.
Now I’m about to go thumos on him now [laughing] Fellow in a pickup truck is annoyed because the lights changed and I’m giving directions He decides to take this hog slop carrying pickup truck [well] and hit my Benz But something said to me You ain’t packing [laughing] and anybody that crazy must have a backup, so you better swallow it and keep on going out of here and not get youself, ’cause if he’s that crazy ’cause crazy ain’t stupid.
Now he’s crazy but he couldn’t be stupid ’cause he know he run into this ole rusty pickup truck on this Benz he got to have something in the back.
So since I want to live to tell the story to a congregation 20 years later [laughing] [laughing, applause] just keep on going [amen] See pride and a haughty spirit, all of it goes down [clapping] and like I tell my sons we’re going to have this debate with you living [right] When we take them into court, we want you living [amen] I don’t want to take them into court after I take you to the burial ground So calm down, be cool You ain’t got to answer.
He say, “Drop what’s in your hand sit down on the curb” Sit down dial your lawyer, but sit down put your hand behind your head do it, amen.
You came over, you came over the road at 95, it is 55 speed limit and he pulled you over do it, amen [amen] Do it, just do it, we’ll deal with it later [yeah] Yeah, I’ll call his boss later, I just get his badge number, I’ll be talking to the chief later but you living [alright now] You understand what I’m saying? You are alive [applause] you don’t have to prove anything to whoever is in the car with you.
Hear me, it just makes sense.
We’ll catch them another time legally, but you living [thank you] Ain’t no sense in you going in no house, no woman in there and and your woman, wife in there and another man in there and you gone shoot everybody up, go thumos, just go black out [laughing] Firing guns everywhere, you in shock Now you going to jail, come on.
Why why should you spend the rest of your life in jail over her infidelity? Amen, you want him Baby? I’ll come on in and its going down? I’ll just walk right by, don’t let me stop you and go straight to the closet [laughing] [laughing] I’m going straight to the closet [chuckles] and get my stuff If she don’t have a name on my house, I’m going straight to the closet and get her stuff [laughing, right] I’m telling you, ain’t no sense, ain’t no sense, ain’t no sense in acting like this is the last person in the world [amen, clapping] Amen, and everybody deserves to live [applause] everybody deserves to live [amen] And if you want to kill yourself, go ahead don’t include me [laughing] You ain’t got to shoot me ‘fore you shoot yourself, everybody.
See this anger business its madness O we gone talk about this a little bit here Bow your heads, real quick.
Father Come in the name of Jesus and I pray Lord [thank you] that you just help us [yes] to control this help us to put this off in the name of Jesus [music] because its so destructive, its so painful.
We, we, we get lost in it Lord [music] where we sit around and conspire and [music] we try to take your place [music] when you told us that vengence is yours [right, music] and that you will repay [music] You took that off our hands [music] So let us put it off out of our minds [music] And let’s treat one another with dignity and [clapping, music] respect and I speak it in Jesus name amen, amen [music] God bless you tonight If you in the house, you need to be saved [music] O how I love Jesus [music] O how I love Jesus [music] O how I love Jesus [music] Because he first love me [music] O how I love Jesus [music] O how I love Jesus [music] O how I love Jesus [music] Because he first love me [music] To me [to me he is so wonderful, music] Come on [to me he is so wonderful, music] [to me he is so wonderful, music] [because he first loved me, music] O how I love Jesus [music] O how I love Jesus [music] O how I love Jesus [music] Because he first loved me [music] Everybody standing [music] glad to see you tonight Amen, I hope you enjoyed being here as I did [applause] glad to be here [applause, music] Father, as we go [music] go with us, watch over us Keep us from the drunken driver [music] keep us from the careless person Help us not to text and drive [music] Help us to focus [music] and let everything be good at home And give us a wonderful night [music] let us sleep deeply and I claim it in Jesus name [music] God bless you, heaven smile on you
